I have been a registered nurse for over 17 years. I
have been a Certified Diabetes Educator for 7 of those years. I can tell you my passion has been to empower patients with
the knowledge necessary to get healthy while providing them with quality healthcare. I hope to expand this site to include
information to help make, what, your health care team tells you, seem very simple. By understanding what diabetes terms
mean, and what the disease is, life can be made simple. Click the link to the American Association for Diabetes Educators
(AADE) to find a CDE in your area (most insurance plans cover the cost for eduation)

What is diabetes? Diabetes is a disease which affects the way
our bodies use carbohydrates (sugar). Carbohydrates (CHO) are found in fruits, starches; like rice, oatmeal, breads, desserts
and such. The human body must have CHO to live. The problem is that these CHO can cause problems if they build up in
our arteries. That's where insulin comes in. Insulin basically cleans the arteries out, by storing sugar in muscles
and cells for energy. With diabetes, there is little or no insulin available. So these CHO "stick" to the artery walls causing
buildup and blockages.
